DRIVEL #1:

The New Issue

I wrote a zine about the concept of “newness,” filled with lots of different types of writing and silly art. I meant to make these pretty regularly, but then the pandemic hit, and I didn’t really want to have a DRIVEL about health or sickness or misery or whatever.

Ripe for Romance
v. 2

I made my first zine ever, Ripe for Romance v. 1, in 2005. Although I was proud of it, and thought it was cute and silly and fun, I didn’t fully grasp the importance of margins or legibility or other things that seem very obvious in hindsight. Since I still liked the concept, a field guide to types of crushes as represented by anthropomorphic fruit, I decided to create a second version in 2014. However! This unexpectedly felt bad, as if I were just ripping myself off and not coming up with new ideas. Lesson learned.

Knitwear designs

I designed two hats and two sets of mittens, which were published in a Better Homes and Gardens special issue! It was unexpected and exciting! I don’t know why they hung them as framed art.

Recipes for Life, or,
delicious sandwiches and other hot stuff

I wrote a zine about sandwich recipes with my friend Ryan Wade. We used to jokingly think of ourselves as a single being called Gryna Swade. Our sandwiches are delicious.

Ripe for Romance
v. 1

Here it is, the first thing I ever made for public consumption. I wrote it when I was 21 years old, living in a 22-person student co-op in Santa Cruz, and working at a tiny health food store. I think I made 30 copies, which I sold at a local crafts fair, I still have the originals somewhere.
